The lights go down over the Thu Bồn river and a kilometre of stage wakes up at once. A girl at a silk loom begins to tell you about a place four hundred years ago, and then five hundred people walk out of the dark — farmers, merchants, a princess going to her wedding, a woman waiting on a shore for a ship that trades all year. Boats move on real water. Whole streets of Faifo assemble themselves in front of you, the port where Japan and China and Europe once met at the edge of Vietnam. And in the last act, hundreds of ao dai fill the largest outdoor stage in the country, and four centuries land in a single image. Sixty minutes on an island, and Hoi An stops being a pretty old town and becomes a story you were briefly inside.

Hoi An Memories is an outdoor narrative spectacular staged on Cồn Hến, an island in the Thu Bồn river beside Hoi An's Ancient Town. The performance area covers 25,000 square metres and runs more than a kilometre end to end, facing an auditorium of roughly 3,300 seats. The cast is 500 strong. The operator holds a Vietnamese national record for the largest outdoor stage in the country — a national record, not a Guinness one, despite what several ticket resellers claim, and worth checking wherever you see that claim repeated.
Four centuries of Hoi An, in five acts
The show is chronological rather than abstract. It opens with a silk-weaving girl who returns across the acts as narrator, moves through the historical marriage of Princess Huyền Trân to the Cham king Chế Mân, then to the women who waited on shore through the trading seasons, then to Faifo — the port at its commercial peak, when Japanese, Chinese and European merchants filled it. The finale leaves history for modern Hoi An and the ao dai. Sixty minutes, no interval, roughly twelve minutes an act.
A park you are meant to arrive early for
The stage sits inside a larger complex that opens at 16:00, four hours before the show starts, and the operator clearly intends the afternoon to be part of the ticket. There are reconstructed Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese villages, craft quarters built around traditional trades, and a rolling programme of smaller performances through the late afternoon, including Bài Chòi folk singing. Arriving at 19:45 for a 20:00 curtain means paying for a park you never see. The whole complex, show included, is dark every Tuesday.

What day is the Hoi An Memories Show closed?
Tuesday. Both the Memories Show and the surrounding theme park are dark all day every Tuesday, operating Wednesday through Monday. This is verifiable on the operator's own booking calendar, where Tuesday dates are greyed out and cannot be selected. If your only free evening in Hoi An falls on a Tuesday, plan a lantern-boat evening in the Ancient Town instead.
Does my show ticket include the theme park?
ECO, HIGH and VIP seat tickets bundle theme park entry with the seat, so you do not need to buy both. The operator also sells a park-only ticket at 100,000 VND for adults and 50,000 VND for children, for visitors who want the park without the performance. Check what your specific voucher covers before you travel.
What time does it start and how long is it?
The main performance runs 20:00 to 21:00 — sixty minutes, five acts, no interval. There is only one show per night. The park itself opens at 16:00 with mini shows through the late afternoon, and the operator asks you to be seated 15 to 20 minutes before curtain. Some older sources list 19:30; that is outdated.
What happens if it rains?
The show is fully open-air and does not cancel easily. In light rain it proceeds and free ponchos are handed out at the theatre check point. In severe weather it may be rescheduled or cancelled, with a rebooking or refund. Only VIP is fully covered, HIGH is partly covered, and ECO has no shelter at all.
Are the cheap ECO seats worth it?
Sometimes. The stage is over a kilometre wide, so elevation matters more than proximity — ECO is closest but lowest and flattest, and completely uncovered. In the dry months from roughly February to April it delivers most of the spectacle. In the wet season, the 150,000 VND upgrade from ECO to HIGH is the best-value decision available.
